With so many different types of optical storage platforms around at the moment it's easy to get confused about the best software to use to rip or copy your disks. StarBurn is a nice solution because it supports a wide range of different disk formats, and it's also free. With StarBurn you can record data, music, an image of a CD or DVD, extract tracks of audio, generate a disk image and even compress different formats from audio in MP3 or OGG.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Windows XP will be able to pick up and use the program straight away, as its file explorer panel mirrors the OS precisely. Although the actions you'll need are presented in the form of a wizard, meaning that although burning times aren't the quickest around, this is a very simple, free solution for copying any type of disk.

With StarBurn you can perform grabbing, copying and burning operations as well as advanced DVD authoring and mastering. These advanced features enable you to create DVD-Video content from custom video files, or compilations from other DVDs.

Additionally with the DVD Splitting Wizard you can split DVD-Video discs into smaller parts and burn them to DVD writable discs or share them with the StarPort DVD-ROM emulator and watch DVD video directly on your PC. This enables you to create copies of 8.5 GB dual layer DVDs with just a few mouse clicks.
